Meeting the Need for Plastic Waste Management
The Net Zero Plastic (NZP) platform for the production and sale of Plastic Elimination Certificates (PECs) enables the plastic products industry to effectively meet the sustainability ambitions of its customers. NZP works with waste processing entities capable of permanently eliminating plastic waste to create Plastic Elimination Certificates and we offer those Certificates to producers and users of plastic products to fulfill their environmental commitments.
Through our “Made with Net Zero Plastic” eco-branding, we add real market value to plastic products and effectively mobilize public concern about plastic waste in the environment.
The financial resources we create will be used to implement the much-needed large-scale installations to manage plastic waste that protects both the environment and the climate.
By combining the model of extended producer responsibility with the structure of environmental offsets, the NZP platform addresses all types of plastic waste - not just some narrow slice of the problem.
Thousands of producers of plastic products worldwide can practically participate, along with their customers, in the long-term solutions for plastic waste management provided by Net Zero Plastic. A similar “offsetting” voluntary framework has already been established for management of carbon in the atmosphere and is expanding rapidly.
The plastics industry has much to gain by implementing a similar market-oriented framework, as it leverages public sentiments and enables the best plastic waste elimination solutions.
We believe the current situation surrounding plastic waste pollution can be resolved by connecting the growing market concerns about the fate of plastic in the environment with those who are most capable of responsibly processing plastic waste. And the way to do that is through a financial instrument that is applied at the maximum economic value of plastic products and not solely by attempting to resolve this sustainability issue downstream at the point of minimum plastic value as unwanted waste.
Viable Plastic Waste Elimination Processes
Our perspective is that the unmet need for environmentally responsible plastic waste management can be achieved by several types of engineered processes:
- By conversion at a molecular level to chemical compounds and feedstocks,
- By application of modern low-carbon-emission energy conversion technology (plastic is itself a high-quality fuel). This implies building new carbon capture and storage facilities.
- By advanced mechanical recycling that produces a plastic resin product that meets the same quality standards achieved by resins originally, conventionally produced from fossil hydrocarbons (we don't see widely practiced "downcycling" of plastic resins as long term solution)
It now well understood that, with few execeptions, these methods of permanent elimination of plastic waste cost more than current waste disposal practices and these costs must be covered by the producers and users of plastic. The NZP platform will leverage voluntary market actions at the point of maximum plastic material value creation (sale of finished plastic products) rather than at its point of minimum value as waste to help meet this cost burden.
The Role of Plastic Elimination Certificates
Through the use of Plastic Elimination Certificates (PECs), producer accountability can be enhanced but without undermining efforts to reduce plastic usage and increase circularity of plastic usage, while facilitating the health, safety, and convenience benefits that plastic brings to all.
Our Plastic Elimination Certificates will allow all producers of plastic products to provide their customers with verifiable assurances that the purchase and use of their products will not be a net contributor to the problem of unmanaged plastic waste.
The NZP strategy for the management of plastic waste through the use of Plastic Elimination Certificates promotes the deployment of large scale plastic waste elimination methods that are economical, environmentally safe and climate neutral.
Overall, we expect that PECs produced by NZP will add a minimal, and acceptable, cost burden to the plastics industry and its customers. As an example, a typical plastic cup sold with a drink at sporting events will cost less than one US cent more with PEC to guarantee a “net zero” contribution to the accumulation of unmanaged plastic waste.
NZP can lead to significantly reduced reliance on landfilling, dumping, and other undesirable forms of plastic waste disposal by providing the financial resources needed to implement responsible plastic waste elimination.
Importantly, all product plastic manufacturers and their customers, large and small, will have a convenient, non-disruptive and certifiable way to actively address a growing environmental concern.
